How to use a document scanner
A document scanner turns a paper sheet into a file you can send. In RealScaner that means: open the site, snap or import the page, mark the four edges, download PDF. Phone or computer. No app store, no account.
People search this when a clerk, teacher, or landlord asks for a PDF and they do not own a USB flatbed. Everyday paper does not need one. Certified copies, notarized packets, and bound books still do.
Scan in the browser
Put the sheet on a dark, plain table. Smooth wrinkles. Thin paper: slide a blank sheet underneath so the back does not ghost through.
- Open realscaner.com in Safari, Chrome, or Edge.
- Allow the camera, or import a photo. Leave a thin margin so all four corners stay in the frame.
- Mark the edges. Drag each corner onto the paper so a slightly angled shot still squares up.
- Add the next page from the thumbnail strip if the packet has more than one sheet.
- Download PDF. Open it and scroll it before you send it.

Lighting and a clean crop
- Sit by a window. Overhead lamps put a hot spot in the middle and a shadow from your hands.
- Turn the flash off on glossy paper and thermal receipts. Move the page until the glare is gone.
- Fill the frame with the paper, then mark the edges so the desk drops out.
- Capture one page at a time. Photographing a stack hides the lower sheets.
- Keep the same height and light for every page so the PDF looks like one document.

Name, compress, and send
Name the PDF for the person who will open it, for example 2026-10-rent-receipt.pdf. Keep one file per packet. Open the PDF and confirm dates, stamps, and both sides of an ID if the form asked for them. Markup on a scan is a drawing on the page, and a cryptographic digital signature is a separate, certificate-based step.
Stay on RealScaner for the follow-on jobs, all in the browser. Shrink a large file with PDF compression. Reorder or drop pages in Organize PDF. Stamp a copy with Watermark PDF. Add page numbers. Draw a name on a signature line with Signature maker. If the portal wants a JPEG of one side of an ID, export JPEG from the scanner or shrink a photo with image compression. When a phone PDF is the right tool
Phone and browser scans cover receipts, homework, invoices, meeting notes, and most “please send a PDF” requests. Bound books, very small type on glossy magazines, and any job that requires a certified or notarized copy call for a flatbed or the office’s own process. A short checklist before you send the file
- Open the PDF and scroll every page.
- Confirm signatures, stamps, and dates are fully visible.
- Confirm the page order matches the form.
- Check the file size against the portal or email limit.
- Use a date-and-purpose file name.
Common questions
How do I use a document scanner?
Open RealScaner in the browser, allow the camera or import a photo, snap the page from above, mark the four edges, add more pages if you need them, then download PDF. You do not install an app or create an account.
Do I need a hardware scanner?
Not for everyday paper. A phone or laptop camera in RealScaner is enough for receipts, forms, homework, and most “please send a PDF” requests. Use a flatbed for certified copies, notarized packets, and bound books.
Can I scan on a computer without a USB scanner?
Yes. Open RealScaner in Chrome or Edge, import a photo of the page from your phone or webcam, mark the edges, and download PDF. Phone-then-send also works: scan on the phone and email the file to yourself.
Where does the scan get stored?
RealScaner processes pages in the browser and you download the PDF to the device. There is no account. Attach the file to email or upload it when you are ready.
