How to scan a document from a phone online

To scan a document from a phone online, open the RealScaner scanner in the mobile browser, snap the page, mark the four edges, and download a PDF. There is no app to install. Processing stays on the device. You can email the file or upload it the same day.

This is the usual job: a signed form, a receipt, homework, a lease page, or a letter someone asked you to send as PDF while you are away from a desk scanner. A flatbed still belongs on certified copies, notarized packets, and bound books. Everyday paper does not.

Why the browser is enough

An online scan is a camera capture that becomes a squared PDF in the tab you already have. Safari, Chrome, and other mobile browsers can hand off to the camera, so the phone does not need a store listing or an account. The crop lives on the page so you can pull a corner in if a signature or footer sat outside the first box.

The destination decides the format. Email and most government or school portals want PDF. Some visa and HR sites want a JPEG of one side of an ID. Export the format the form lists, then check the kilobyte cap.

Scan the page in the phone browser

Put the sheet on a dark, plain table. Smooth wrinkles. If the sheet is thin, slide a blank page underneath so print from the back does not show through. Stand over the page and hold the phone with both hands so the camera looks straight down.

  1. Open realscaner.com in the phone browser.
  2. Tap the camera button and snap the sheet. Leave a thin margin so all four corners stay in the frame.
  3. Mark the edges. Drag each corner onto the paper. That squares a page that was shot at a slight angle.
  4. Add the next page in the same workspace if the packet has more than one sheet.
  5. Download PDF. Open the file and scroll it before you send it.

For extra lighting detail, see how to scan a document on your phone. iPhone-only Safari steps live in how to use a document scanner on iPhone. Scanning with no hardware at all is covered in how to scan a document without a scanner.

Lighting and a clean crop

  • Use window light from the side. Ceiling lamps put a hot spot in the middle and a shadow from your hands.
  • Turn the flash off on glossy paper and thermal receipts. Move the page until the glare is gone.
  • Fill the frame with the paper. Then mark the edges so the background table drops out.
  • Capture one page at a time. Photographing a stack hides the lower sheets.

Android and iPhone both work

The same site runs on both platforms. On Android, Chrome or the default browser is enough. On iPhone, Safari is the usual path. The camera button opens the phone's own camera for one shot, then returns you to the page. If nothing opens, check that the browser is allowed to use the camera in the phone's settings and reload the tab.

A gallery photo you already took can become a scan if the paper fills the frame and the text is sharp. Import it, mark the edges, then export PDF. If the smallest line is already blurry, retake the picture rather than enlarging a soft JPEG.

Name, compress, and send

Name the PDF for the clerk who will open it, for example 2026-10-rent-receipt.pdf. Keep one file per packet. Open the PDF and confirm dates, stamps, and both sides of an ID if the form asked for them. Markup on a scan is a drawing on the page, and a cryptographic digital signature is a separate, certificate-based step. If a portal rejects the packet, follow how to prepare a PDF for an upload portal.

Stay on RealScaner for the follow-on jobs, all in the browser. Shrink a large file with PDF compression. Reorder or drop pages in Organize PDF. Stamp a copy with Watermark PDF. Add page numbers. Draw a name on a signature line with Signature maker. If the portal wants a JPEG of one side of an ID, export JPEG from the scanner or shrink a photo with image compression.

When a phone PDF is the right tool

Phone scans cover receipts, homework, invoices, meeting notes, and most “please send a PDF” requests. Bound books, very small type on glossy magazines, and any job that requires a certified or notarized copy call for a flatbed or the office’s own process. For that line, read when a phone scan is good enough. The no-account, no-watermark walkthrough is in how to use an online document scanner for free.

A short checklist before you send the file

  1. Open the PDF and scroll every page.
  2. Confirm signatures, stamps, and dates are fully visible.
  3. Confirm the page order matches the form.
  4. Check the file size against the portal or email limit.
  5. Use a date-and-purpose file name.

Common questions

How do I scan a document from a phone online?

Open RealScaner in the phone browser, tap the camera button, snap the page from above, mark the four edges so the paper is squared, add more pages if you need them, then download PDF. You do not install an app. The file stays on the phone until you share it.

Can I scan a document on my phone without an app?

Yes. RealScaner runs in Safari, Chrome, or another mobile browser. Snap the page, adjust the corners, and export PDF without an App Store or Play Store download.

Does an online phone scan work on Android and iPhone?

Yes. Use the same site on both. iPhone-only Safari notes live in the iPhone scanner post. Android uses Chrome or the default browser the same way.

Is a phone scan from the browser accepted for uploads?

Most school, office, and portal uploads accept a clear, full-page PDF under the file-size cap. Identity cards, notarized copies, and court filings still follow the office’s own rules. Read the upload page before you send the file.
