Why is my PDF password protected?

A PDF asks for a password because whoever made it added an open password, and that password is stored in the file. Usually that is the sender: banks, depositories, and government portals lock statements and e-documents before you get them. Sometimes it is an app, because Preview, Word, and Acrobat can all add a password when a file is saved. Nothing is wrong with the file, and the password is not your email, phone, or app PIN. For many Indian documents the issuer publishes the rule, so you can work it out. Once you have it, RealScaner Unlock PDF removes the password and saves a copy that opens without one, in your browser.

The details below come from Adobe’s Acrobat help, the PDF standard, Apple, Microsoft, and the issuers’ own pages. Each source is linked at the end. Facts are current as of October 28, 2026.

Why is my PDF asking for a password?

Because the file is encrypted with an open password. Adobe’s help describes two kinds of PDF password. A Document Open Password “Requires you to enter a password to open and view the PDF, restricting access to its contents.” A Permissions Password “Allows you to restrict certain features in the PDF, such as printing, editing, copying content, and adding comments.” A password box that appears before you see any page is the first kind.

The prompt comes from the file, not from your app or your account. The PDF standard, ISO 32000-1, says a reader first tries to open an encrypted file without a password, and “If this authentication attempt fails, the application should prompt for a password.” That is why the box follows the file from app to app, and from your phone to your computer.

If the PDF opens without a prompt but Acrobat shows (SECURED) after its name, or blocks printing or copying, that is the permissions password, a different lock. Why does my PDF say SECURED? explains how to see what it blocks and how to remove it from files you own.

Why is my PDF suddenly password protected?

Nothing in the file broke. One of these happened:

  • The sender protected it. Banks, depositories, tax portals, and payroll systems lock files before they send them. The PDF standard notes that software “may also create an encrypted document without any user interaction if it has some other source of information about what passwords and permissions to use,” so a statement can arrive locked even though nobody asked you to set a password. HDFC Bank, for example, says its NetBanking statement “is password protected to ensure the confidentiality and security of your financial information and prevent unauthorized access.”
  • It was saved with a password on a Mac. In Preview, File > Export has a Permissions button with Require Password To Open Document. Apple notes you can “create a password-protected copy without setting a password for the original PDF” by giving the export a new name, so check which of the two files you are opening.
  • It was locked on an iPhone. In the Preview app, Lock asks for a password, and Apple says “The Require Password toggle turns on automatically.” Apple’s tip “To keep a copy that’s not password-protected” is to duplicate the file first.
  • Word or Acrobat added it. Word’s PDF options include Encrypt the document with a password. Microsoft’s instruction is “To restrict access so only people with the password can open the PDF, select this option.” Acrobat Pro can set both kinds of password.

An email attachment that asks for a password falls under the first case. The sender’s system encrypted it and the sender sets the format, so check the email the PDF arrived in before you start guessing.

What is my PDF password? Where to find it

Your PDF password is whatever the person or system that created the file chose. Adobe puts it plainly: “You can only remove a password from a PDF if you know the current password.” Look for it in this order:

  1. The email, SMS, or download page that gave you the file. The sender sets the format, so start with the message that delivered it. HDFC Bank says its statement password is mentioned “in the note section on the Account Statement download page only when you select the format as PDF and also in the download account statement success message.”
  2. The issuer’s own help page. Several Indian issuers publish their rule. They are listed in the next section.
  3. Your password manager, if you made the file yourself. Adobe’s advice is to “Store passwords in a password manager instead of writing them down or sharing them via email.”
  4. The sender. If nothing else works, ask for the password or for an unprotected copy.

Type it exactly. Capitals matter, so sure1990 fails where SURE1990 works. Most issuer rules are built from your name, date of birth, PAN, or customer ID, the very details Adobe tells its own users to avoid: its best practices say to “avoid easily guessed information such as names or birthdates.” That makes the password easy for you to rebuild, and just as easy for anyone who knows those details, so treat the PDF itself as the thing to protect.

PDF passwords set by Indian issuers

These rules are published on the issuers’ own pages, checked on October 28, 2026. For any document not listed here, check the email the PDF arrived in.

  • e-Aadhaar (UIDAI): the first four letters of your name in capitals, then your year of birth. UIDAI’s example is SURESH KUMAR, born in 1990, who uses SURE1990. Short names, initials, and old downloads are covered in what is the Aadhaar PDF password.
  • e-PAN (Protean): your date of birth as DDMMYYYY. In Protean’s example, a birthday of March 15, 1990 gives 15031990. Company PANs and the other e-PAN services are in what is the PAN card PDF password.
  • AIS, the Annual Information Statement (Income Tax Department): your PAN in lower case followed by your date of birth, or the date of incorporation or formation, as DDMMYYYY with no space. The department’s example is PAN AAAAA1234A and a birth date of 21 January 1991, which gives aaaaa1234a21011991.
  • NSDL e-CAS and CDSL e-CAS (demat statements): both depositories tell you to enter the “PAN of the first/sole demat account holder in CAPITAL letters.” Examples and fixes are in what is the CAS statement password.
  • Mutual fund CAS from CAMS or KFintech: the password you typed when you requested the statement. CAMS says the statement “will be encrypted using the password provided by you in the form above,” and KFintech says, “You will need this password to open the statement.” If you have forgotten it, request a new statement with a new password.
  • HDFC Bank account statement from NetBanking: HDFC’s FAQ says, “The password is your Customer ID (CustID).” That answer covers statements downloaded from NetBanking. For statements that come by email or from the app, check the email the PDF arrived in.

Other banks, credit cards, employers, and tax notices set their own formats. Check the message that delivered the file, or ask the sender.

Why does my PDF keep asking for a password every time?

Because typing the password opens the file without changing it. The PDF stays encrypted, so the next time any app opens it, the reader tries without a password, fails, and asks again, exactly as the standard describes. Saving the file in a free reader does not remove it either. Adobe says “Acrobat Reader or mobile versions can only open files with a password,” and that “an Acrobat subscription or free trial is required to permanently remove password protection.” If the box only appears when you print or edit, it is the permissions password described above.

To stop the prompt, keep a second copy without the open password. Acrobat Pro makes one, and Unlock PDF makes one for free, as shown in the next section. Keep the original too, because removing a password rewrites the file, and a digitally signed document only proves itself in its original form.

How to unlock a PDF that is password protected

Unlocking means saving a copy that opens without a password, using the password you have.

Free, in your browser

  1. Open Unlock PDF on your phone or computer and choose the PDF.
  2. The tool checks the file’s protection. A PDF that needs a password is marked Open password required.
  3. Type the password. Use the eye button to check capitals and digits.
  4. Press Unlock PDF. If the password is wrong, the tool says so, changes nothing, and lets you try again.
  5. When the result reads “Checked: the copy opens without a password,” press Download PDF. The copy has -unlocked added to its name, and your original is not changed.

Unlock PDF runs qpdf, an open-source PDF program, inside the browser tab, so the file and the password are never uploaded. The password is used once, cleared from the field, and never stored or logged. The copy keeps the text, images, links, forms, and bookmarks, because the file is decrypted rather than turned into pictures. Adobe says the same of removing a password in general: it “does not change the content or layout of the PDF.” When the file carries a digital signature, Unlock PDF warns you next to the download button, so you keep the signed original for anyone who checks it. From the result screen you can go straight to Compress PDF, Organize PDF, or Merge PDF.

With Adobe Acrobat Pro

Adobe’s steps: select All tools > Protect a PDF, choose Set security properties under Advanced Properties, open the Security tab and select Change Settings, deselect Require a password to open the document, select OK twice, and save the PDF. The free Acrobat Reader opens protected files but does not remove the password.

On upload sites

An upload site receives the file and, for an open password, the password too. Adobe’s own advice is to “avoid uploading any documents containing private, financial, or legal information unless you’re sure the site is secure and trustworthy.” For how upload tools treat your files, read is iLovePDF safe.

Can you open a PDF if you forgot the password?

Only with the password, or with the owner password, which also opens the file. The standard says “Correctly supplying either password (owner or user password) should enable the user to open the document, decrypt it, and display it on the screen.” A PDF has no account behind it, so there is no reset link. Adobe adds, “If you’ve forgotten the password or don’t have permission, removing it may violate privacy or copyright policies.”

What does work:

  • Rebuild it. If the file came from an issuer listed above, apply its rule again and check capitals and the date format first.
  • Get a fresh copy. UIDAI, Protean, and the Income Tax e-filing portal let you download the document again under the same published rule, which helps when an old file refuses every guess. A new CAMS or KFintech statement takes a new password that you choose.
  • Ask the sender for the password or for an unprotected copy.
  • Export it again from the Word file, photos, or other source you made it from, if the PDF is your own, and skip the password this time.

Once you have the password, Unlock PDF removes it, and the copy opens straight away from then on.

Key takeaways

  • A PDF asks for a password when it has an open password. The sender, or the app that saved the file, added it, and it travels with the file.
  • Banks, depositories, and government portals lock files before you get them. Preview, Word, and Acrobat can add a password when a file is saved.
  • Your password is the sender’s rule. UIDAI, Protean, the Income Tax Department, NSDL, CDSL, CAMS, KFintech, and HDFC Bank publish theirs.
  • The prompt comes back every time because typing the password opens the file without changing it. An unlocked copy stops it.
  • RealScaner Unlock PDF removes the password once you type it, works in your browser, and never uploads the file.

Common questions

Why is my PDF asking for a password?

The file has an open password, added by the sender or by the app that saved it. The password is stored in the file, so every PDF app asks for it before showing a page. If the file opens but blocks printing or copying, that is a permissions password instead.

Why is my PDF suddenly password protected?

Either the sender’s system protected it, as banks and tax portals do, or a password was added when the file was saved. Preview on a Mac (Require Password To Open Document), Lock in Preview on iPhone, and Word’s Encrypt the document with a password option all do this.

What is my PDF password?

Whatever the sender chose. Check the email or download page that gave you the file, then the issuer’s help page. e-Aadhaar uses the first four letters of your name in capitals plus your birth year, e-PAN uses your date of birth as DDMMYYYY, and NSDL and CDSL e-CAS use your PAN in capitals.

Why does my PDF keep asking for a password every time?

Typing the password opens the file without removing it, so the next open asks again. Save a copy without the open password, in Acrobat Pro or for free with RealScaner Unlock PDF, and keep the original.

How do I unlock a password protected PDF?

Open RealScaner Unlock PDF, choose the file, type the password, and press Unlock PDF. When the copy is checked, download it. The file and the password stay in your browser, and your original is not changed.

Can you open a PDF if you forgot the password?

You need the open password or the owner password. Rebuild it from the issuer’s rule, download a fresh copy, or ask the sender. Adobe says you can only remove a password from a PDF if you know the current password.
