How to convert HEIC to JPG on Windows, iPhone, and Mac
To convert HEIC to JPG, open the photo in an app that can export JPEG and save a copy: Preview or Photos on a Mac, the Preview app on an iPhone, or a browser converter on Windows, Android, and Chromebook. To stop new iPhone photos from saving as HEIC at all, open Settings, tap Camera, tap Formats, and choose Most Compatible. If your iPhone photos will not open on a Windows PC or an upload form rejects them, RealScaner HEIC to JPG converts the whole batch right in your browser, with no upload and no app to install.
The steps below are quoted from Apple, Microsoft, USCIS, the IRS, and the State Department. Each source is linked at the end. Facts are current as of October 29, 2026.
Why are my iPhone photos HEIC instead of JPEG?
Because the camera is saving them in HEIF, the High Efficiency Image File Format, and .heic is the file extension it uses. Apple says iOS 11 introduced the format and that “HEIF and HEVC offer better compression than JPEG and H.264, so they use less storage space on your devices and iCloud Photos, while preserving the same visual quality.” iPhone 7 and later can capture it, and Apple calls capturing in HEIF and HEVC “recommended.”
If one folder holds both HEIC and JPEG files, that is normal. Apple explains two ways a photo turns into a JPEG on its own:
- Sharing. When you send photos “using other methods, such as AirDrop, Messages, or email, and the receiving device doesn’t support the newer media formats, the media might automatically be shared in a more compatible format, such as JPEG or H.264.”
- Importing over USB. “When you import HEIF or HEVC media from an attached iPhone or iPad into Photos, Image Capture, or a PC, the media might be converted to JPEG or H.264.”
Photos shared through iCloud Photos stay in HEIC. Apple says that media “is preserved in its original format, resolution, and frame rate.”
How to save iPhone photos as JPG instead of HEIC
Change one camera setting. Apple’s steps are:
- Open Settings, then tap Camera.
- Tap Formats, then tap Most Compatible.
Apple says, “All new photos and videos will now use JPEG or H.264 format. To return to using the space-saving HEIF and HEVC formats, choose High Efficiency.” The option only appears on iPhones that can capture HEIF in the first place. It changes new photos only, so the HEIC files already in your library need converting, as shown in the sections below. Apple’s page on moving photos to a computer gives the same steps “to ensure that photos from your iPhone or iPad have the best compatibility with Windows.”
To send a single photo as a JPEG without changing the setting, use the sharing options in Photos. Open the photo, tap the Share button, tap Options, and choose the format. Apple lists three choices: “Tap Automatic for the best file format for the destination, tap Current to prevent a file format conversion, or tap Most Compatible and files may convert to JPEG or MOV.”
If you move photos to a Windows PC with a cable, check one more setting. Apple says that to stop conversion during a USB import you “open Settings, tap Apps, tap Photos, then scroll down and tap Keep Originals.” If you want JPEGs on the PC, leave Keep Originals off.
How to convert HEIC to JPG on iPhone
Use the Preview app for a file, or the browser for a batch. Preview on iPhone exports images to other formats. Apple’s steps:
- Go to the Preview app and open the image. Preview browses your files under Recents, Shared, and Browse.
- Tap the button next to the filename, then tap Export.
- Select a file format. Apple says, “Available formats are HEIC, JPEG, PDF, PNG, and TIFF.”
- For JPEG, adjust Size: “Drag the slider left for a smaller file size or right for higher quality.”
- Choose a location, rename the file if you like, and tap Save.
To convert many photos at once, open HEIC to JPG in Safari and add them. RealScaner converts every photo on the iPhone itself, then gives you one JPG or one ZIP to download. Nothing goes to a server, which matters for photos of IDs, receipts, and family.
How to convert HEIC to JPG on Windows 11 or 10
The simplest free route is a converter that runs in your browser, because it needs no Microsoft Store extension. With RealScaner:
- Copy the HEIC photos from your iPhone to the PC, or save them from email or iCloud.
- Open HEIC to JPG in Edge, Chrome, or Firefox and drop the photos onto the page.
- Leave the output on JPG and pick a quality: High (95%), Standard (88%), or Smaller file (75%).
- Press Convert to JPG.
- Press Download. One photo saves as a JPG, several save as a single ZIP, and each photo also has its own download button.
Each JPG keeps the photo’s name, so IMG_4452.HEIC becomes IMG-4452.jpg. RealScaner decodes the photos inside the browser tab, so there is no paid HEVC extension to buy and nothing to install.
Microsoft also documents a no-converter route. Its help page says, “Many devices will automatically convert HEIC photos and HEVC videos to a more common format when transferring or emailing the files. Try plugging in your iPhone or Android into your PC and moving the files over. Or just email the files to yourself from your phone and save them on your PC.” Microsoft adds that you “may need to change the Camera and Photo settings” on the phone for this to work. On an iPhone, the settings that matter are Formats and Keep Originals, covered above.
How to open HEIC files on Windows
Install two extensions, or convert the photos to JPG. When the Photos app meets a HEIF or HEVC file, Microsoft says you might see the message “You need an extension to use this file.” Its fix is to get both of these from the Microsoft Store:
- HEIF Image Extensions, free.
- HEVC Video Extensions, $0.99.
Microsoft says, “You’ll need both, even if you only plan on using photos and not videos.” The Store listing explains why: “The HEVC Video Extensions package must be installed in order to view images stored in HEIF files that use the .heic, .hif or .heif file extensions.” After installing them, restart the Photos app.
If you only need to view or send the photos, converting is simpler. A JPG from RealScaner opens in any viewer, editor, email client, or upload form.
How to convert HEIC to JPG on Mac
Use Preview or Photos, both built into macOS. Apple’s general rule is, “If you open an HEIF image in Photos or Preview on your Mac, choose File > Export, then choose a format such as JPEG or PNG before saving.”
In Preview:
- Open the HEIC file, then choose File > Export.
- Click the Format pop-up menu and choose JPEG. Apple says that for JPEG “you can adjust the image’s quality.”
- Type a new name or choose a location, then click Save.
In Photos, select the photos, choose File > Export > Export [number] Photos, then click the Photo Kind pop-up menu and choose JPEG. Apple describes JPEG as creating “small files suitable for use with websites and other photo apps.” The same dialog lets you pick a JPEG quality and a size.
How to convert multiple HEIC to JPG at once
Every route above handles a batch. On a Mac, Apple’s Preview tip is, “To convert more than one image file at a time, open the files in one window, select them in that window’s sidebar,” then export. In Photos, select all the photos before you choose File > Export.
On Windows, iPhone, Android, or a Chromebook, add the whole set to HEIC to JPG. RealScaner takes dozens of photos in one go, converts them with one press, and downloads them as one ZIP. There is no account, no watermark, and no daily limit, so you can run the next batch straight away.
If the photos are pages of a document, a receipt, or a form, choose PDF as the output instead. RealScaner puts every photo into one PDF, one photo per page, with pages sized to each photo or fitted on US Letter or A4. For more control over page order, JPG to PDF arranges the converted JPGs, and how to turn a photo into a PDF covers the rest.
How to convert HEIC to JPG without losing quality
Export at the highest JPEG quality the destination accepts, and keep the full resolution. Preview on Mac and iPhone and Photos on Mac all let you set JPEG quality when you export, so slide it toward higher quality when detail matters.
In RealScaner, choose High (95%) when detail matters most, Standard (88%) for everyday sharing, or Smaller file (75%) for email. Every photo keeps its full resolution and correct rotation. When you want a lossless copy, choose PNG instead.
Think about what travels with the photo, too. Apple notes that sharing a photo “includes sharing its associated metadata, such as date and time, location, device, and captions.” RealScaner removes GPS location, camera details, and capture time by default. For JPG output you can keep the date and camera details without the location, or keep everything.
How to convert HEIC to JPG on Android or a Chromebook
Use the browser. Open HEIC to JPG in Chrome on the phone or Chromebook, add the HEIC files, and download the JPGs or the ZIP. RealScaner runs the same way on a phone, a Chromebook, and a desktop, with nothing to install.
How to upload HEIC photos as JPEG
Check what the portal accepts, then convert if HEIC is not on the list. Three US government portals show how much this varies:
- USCIS online filing: “Files must not be larger than 12MB.” and “Files generally must be PDFs, JPGs, or JPEGs. For some forms, we also accept files in TIF or TIFF format.” HEIC is not on the list, so convert evidence photos first.
- IRS Document Upload Tool: you can “Upload scans, photos, or digital copies of documents as JPGs, PNGs or PDFs.” Again, no HEIC.
- State Department online passport renewal: the photo can be “a JPG, JPEG, PNG, HEIC, or HEIF file,” and “The file size should be between 54 KB and 10 MB.” Here a HEIC photo is fine as long as it meets the size range and the photo rules.
After converting, RealScaner links straight to the next step: Compress Image when a JPG is over a portal’s limit, Resize Image when a form asks for exact pixels, and JPG to PDF when the portal wants one PDF. Target sizes such as 100 KB are covered in how to reduce image size in KB.
What HEIC to JPG does
- It converts HEIC and HEIF photos from an iPhone, iPad, or Mac into JPG, PNG, or one PDF.
- It runs on your device, so your photos are never uploaded. When a browser cannot open HEIC itself, the decoder loads from this site, not from a third party.
- It offers three JPG qualities: High (95%), Standard (88%), and Smaller file (75%).
- It removes GPS location, camera details, and capture time by default, with options to keep the date and camera only, or everything.
- It keeps every photo’s full resolution and correct rotation.
- It converts dozens of photos in one go and downloads them as one ZIP, with no account, watermark, or daily limit.
- It builds one PDF with a photo per page, sized to each photo or fitted on US Letter or A4.
- It links straight to Compress Image, Resize Image, and JPG to PDF for the converted files.

Key takeaways
- iPhones save HEIC when Settings, Camera, Formats is set to High Efficiency. Most Compatible makes new photos JPEG.
- On a Mac or iPhone, Preview exports a HEIC photo as a JPEG copy.
- Windows needs the free HEIF Image Extensions and the $0.99 HEVC Video Extensions to show HEIC photos in the Photos app.
- USCIS online filing takes PDF, JPG, or JPEG files, so convert HEIC photos before you upload them.
- RealScaner HEIC to JPG converts whole batches in your browser, never uploads the photos, and removes GPS location by default.
Common questions
How can I convert a HEIC photo to JPG?
Open it in an app that can export JPEG and save a copy. On a Mac, use File, Export in Preview or Photos. On an iPhone, export from the Preview app. On Windows, Android, or a Chromebook, open RealScaner HEIC to JPG in the browser, add the photo, and download the JPG.
Why are my photos suddenly HEIC instead of JPG?
Your iPhone is set to capture in High Efficiency, which saves photos in HEIF, the format behind .heic files. Apple recommends it and says it uses less storage at the same visual quality. Photos that arrived by AirDrop, Messages, or email, or that were imported to a PC, may have been converted to JPEG along the way, which is why a folder can hold both.
How can I convert HEIC files to JPG in Windows 11?
Open RealScaner HEIC to JPG in Edge, Chrome, or Firefox, drop in the photos, choose JPG and a quality, and press Convert to JPG. Several photos download as one ZIP. The conversion runs in the browser, so no Windows app or extension is needed.
How do I stop my iPhone photos from being HEIC?
Open Settings, tap Camera, tap Formats, then tap Most Compatible. Apple says all new photos and videos will then use JPEG or H.264. Photos you already took stay in HEIC until you convert them.
Why won't my HEIC photos open in Windows?
The Photos app needs two Microsoft Store extensions to show HEIC files: HEIF Image Extensions, which is free, and HEVC Video Extensions, which costs $0.99. Microsoft says you need both, even for photos only. Converting the photos to JPG avoids the extensions entirely.
How can I convert all HEIC files to JPG?
On a Mac, open them together in Preview, select them all in the sidebar, and choose File, Export, or export them from Photos. On any computer or phone, add them all to RealScaner HEIC to JPG at once and download a single ZIP of JPGs.
How do I make a picture JPEG instead of HEIC?
For new iPhone photos, set Settings, Camera, Formats to Most Compatible. For a photo you are sending, tap Share, then Options, then Most Compatible, and Apple says it may convert to JPEG. For a photo you already have, export a JPEG copy in Preview or convert it with RealScaner HEIC to JPG.
