How to use a document scanner on iPhone
To scan a document on iPhone, open the RealScaner scanner in Safari, point the camera at the page, snap it, mark the four edges, and download a PDF. There is no app to install. The crop lives on the page so you can pull a corner in if a signature or footer sat outside the first box.
This is the usual job: a signed form, a receipt, homework, a lease page, or a letter someone asked you to send as PDF. A flatbed still belongs on certified copies, notarized packets, and bound books. Everyday paper does not.
Scan the page in the browser
Put the sheet on a dark, plain table. Smooth wrinkles. Stand over the page so the camera looks straight down.
- Open realscaner.com in Safari (or Chrome).
- Tap the camera button and snap the sheet. Leave a thin margin so all four corners stay in the frame.
- Mark the edges. Drag each corner onto the paper. That squares a page that was shot at a slight angle.
- Add the next page in the same workspace if the packet has more than one sheet.
- Download PDF. Open the file and scroll it before you send it.
Processing stays in the browser. You get a file you can attach to Mail, drop into Files, or upload to a portal. For extra lighting detail, see how to scan a document on your phone. The same browser flow on any phone is in how to scan a document from a phone online. Phone or computer together: how to use a document scanner.
Lighting and a clean crop
- Use window light from the side. Ceiling lamps put a hot spot in the middle and a shadow from your hands.
- Turn the flash off on glossy paper and thermal receipts. Move the page until the glare is gone.
- Fill the frame with the paper. Then mark the edges so the background table drops out.
- Capture one page at a time. Photographing a stack hides the lower sheets.
Name, compress, and send
Name the PDF for the clerk who will open it, for example 2026-10-rent-receipt.pdf. Keep one file per packet. Open the PDF and confirm dates, stamps, and both sides of an ID if the form asked for them. Markup on a scan is a drawing on the page, and a cryptographic digital signature is a separate, certificate-based step. If a portal rejects the packet, follow how to prepare a PDF for an upload portal.
Stay on RealScaner for the follow-on jobs, all in the browser. Shrink a large file with PDF compression. Reorder or drop pages in Organize PDF. Stamp a copy with Watermark PDF. Add page numbers. Draw a name on a signature line with Signature maker. If the portal wants a JPEG of one side of an ID, export JPEG from the scanner or shrink a photo with image compression.
When a phone PDF is the right tool
Phone scans cover receipts, homework, invoices, meeting notes, and most “please send a PDF” requests. Bound books, very small type on glossy magazines, and any job that requires a certified or notarized copy call for a flatbed or the office’s own process. For that line, read when a phone scan is good enough.
A short checklist before you send the file
- Open the PDF and scroll every page.
- Confirm signatures, stamps, and dates are fully visible.
- Confirm the page order matches the form.
- Check the file size against the portal or email limit.
- Use a date-and-purpose file name.
Common questions
How do I scan a document from iPhone?
Open RealScaner in Safari, tap the camera button, snap the page from above, mark the four edges so the paper is squared, add more pages if you need them, then download PDF. You do not install an app. The file stays on the iPhone until you share it.
Do I need a scanning app for iPhone?
No. RealScaner runs in the browser. You snap the page, adjust the corners, and export PDF without an App Store download or an account.
Can I scan multiple pages into one PDF on iPhone?
Yes. After the first capture, add the next sheet in the same workspace. Save once at the end so every page lands in a single PDF. Drop blank backs unless the form asks for both sides.
Where does the scan get stored?
RealScaner processes the pages in the browser and you download the PDF to the iPhone. The scan does not need an account. Share the file with Mail or Messages when you are ready to send it.
