How to use an online document scanner for free
Open the RealScaner scanner in your browser, photograph the sheet, drag the corners onto the paper, and download PDF. That is the whole job. No app, no trial, no watermark on the file.
This is the query people type when a portal wants a PDF today and they do not want to pay for a scanner app. School forms, rent receipts, ID copies, homework. A hardware flatbed still belongs on certified copies, notarized packets, and bound books. Everyday paper does not.
What “free” actually means here
Free means you load the site, scan, and leave with a PDF. You do not hit a page-count wall. You do not get a logo printed on the last sheet. You do not create an account so a vendor can email you later.
The crop and the PDF build run on the device, and the pictures stay with you until you download or attach them.
Scan the page
Put the sheet on a dark, plain table. Smooth wrinkles. If the paper is thin, slide a blank page underneath so the back does not ghost through. Hold the phone straight above the page, or import a photo you already took if the smallest line of text is sharp.
- Open realscaner.com in Safari or Chrome.
- Tap the camera button, or import a photo. Leave a thin margin so all four corners stay in the frame.
- Mark the edges. Drag each corner onto the paper so a slightly angled shot still squares up.
- Add the next page from the thumbnail strip if the packet has more than one sheet.
- Download PDF. Open the file and scroll it before you send it.
On a phone the camera button hands off to the phone’s own camera, then returns you straight to the page. Tap add page and shoot again for each sheet. The stack walkthrough is in how to scan multiple pages into one PDF.
Lighting that does not wreck a free scan
- Stand by a window. Overhead lamps put a hot spot in the middle and a shadow from your hands.
- Turn the flash off on glossy paper and thermal receipts. Move until the glare is gone.
- Fill the frame with the paper, then crop so the table drops out.
- Keep the same height and light for every page so the PDF looks like one document.

After the download
Open the PDF once. Look for a clipped signature, an upside-down page, and a blank back you did not mean to keep. If the order is wrong, drag pages in Organize PDF. If an upload portal rejects the size, run it through PDF compression. Portal rejections are covered in how to prepare a PDF for an upload portal.
Need a name on a signature line? Use the signature maker. Markup on a scan is a drawing, and a cryptographic digital signature is a separate, certificate-based step. Stamp a copy with Watermark PDF only when you want that mark. Add page numbers if the clerk asked for them. ID photos with a kilobyte cap can go through image compression after the crop.
Identity cards, notarized copies, and court filings still follow the office’s own rules. When a phone scan is good enough draws that line. Broader scan-to-PDF steps are in how to scan a document to PDF. If a store app is still charging you, see how to cancel a PDF scanner subscription.
Common questions
How do I use an online document scanner for free?
Open RealScaner in the browser, allow the camera or import a photo, mark the four edges of the page, add more sheets if you need them, then download PDF. There is no account and no paid tier.
Do I have to create an account or install an app?
No. The scanner runs in Safari or Chrome. You skip the App Store, the Play Store, and a signup form. The file saves through the browser’s usual download sheet.
Will the free PDF have a watermark?
The download from RealScaner is a plain PDF of the pages you scanned. There is no watermark on the file. If you want a stamp later, that is a separate step in Watermark PDF.
Does a free online scanner upload my pages?
On RealScaner the crop and PDF build run in the browser on your phone or computer, and the pages stay on the device until you download or send the file yourself.
