How to rotate a PDF and save it

To rotate a PDF and save it that way, you have to rotate the pages, not just your view of them. Open the file in RealScaner Organize PDF, tick each sideways page, press Rotate right or Rotate left, then export and download the new PDF. It opens the right way up in any viewer. It is free, needs no account, and runs in your browser without uploading the file. The rotate button in Acrobat Reader or Microsoft Edge only turns the view, which is why the page flips back when you open the file again.

Steps for Acrobat, Preview, and iPhone come from Adobe and Apple. Edge and Android details come from Microsoft and Google. Each source is linked at the end. Facts are current as of October 25, 2026.

Why won’t my PDF save after I rotate it?

Most PDF apps offer two kinds of rotation, and only one of them changes the file:

  • Rotate view turns the page on your screen. Adobe’s help page on rotating pages says, “To temporarily change your view of the page, go to View > Rotate view,” and “The original page orientation is restored the next time you open the PDF.”
  • Rotate pages changes the document. In Acrobat it lives in the Organize pages tool, and you save the PDF afterward.

Browser viewers sit on the first side. Microsoft lists Rotate among the “basic reading and navigation features” of the PDF reader built into Edge, next to Zoom and Fit to page. Adobe’s guide to rotating PDFs on a PC says, “While you’re allowed to rotate PDFs in Chrome, Edge and Firefox browsers, you cannot save the rotated document.”

Adobe’s own pages do not agree with each other, which explains a lot of the confusion. That same PC guide tells you to use View > Rotate View and then save, while Adobe’s help page says a view rotation is undone when you reopen the file. Go by the help page: if the command has “view” in its name, the rotation will not stick.

A saved rotation is a small change. The PDF standard, ISO 32000-1, gives every page an optional Rotate entry: “The number of degrees by which the page shall be rotated clockwise when displayed or printed. The value shall be a multiple of 90.” A tool that rotates pages sets that number. It does not redraw the page, so nothing gets blurrier.

How do I rotate a PDF and save it for free?

  1. Open Organize PDF on your phone or computer and choose the PDF. You can add more than one file if you are combining them.
  2. Wait for the page thumbnails. Each card shows the source file, the page size, and the current angle, such as 0°.
  3. Tick the checkbox on every page you want to turn. The rotate buttons turn exactly the pages you tick, so for a document that is sideways throughout, tick each page.
  4. Press Rotate right to turn the ticked pages 90° clockwise, or Rotate left to turn them counterclockwise. Press it twice for an upside-down page. The thumbnail turns and the angle on the card updates.
  5. Press Export PDF, then Download organized PDF. The new file has -organized added to its name, for example lease-organized.pdf.

Turned the wrong page? Undo, Redo, and Reset sit in the same toolbar. Your original file is not changed, so it is still there if you need it.

Organize PDF sets each page’s rotation and copies the page into the new file. It does not turn pages into pictures, so text stays selectable and the page size stays the same. In a test export, the rotated page came out with a Rotate value of 90, the untouched page stayed at 0, and the text on both pages still copied out as text. The same screen also deletes, reorders, and extracts pages, as covered in how to delete pages from a PDF.

How do I rotate just one page in a PDF?

Tick only that page in Organize PDF, press Rotate right or Rotate left, and export. Every other page keeps its orientation, so a landscape table can sit between portrait pages. Because the standard applies the Rotate value whenever a page is displayed or printed, a portrait page turned 90° shows and prints as landscape.

The same works in other apps. In Acrobat, enter the page number under Pages selected before you rotate. In Preview on a Mac, select that page’s thumbnail first.

Can you rotate a PDF in Adobe Acrobat Reader and save it?

Not in the free desktop Reader. On Adobe’s plan comparison, Acrobat Reader is listed for “View, print, share, and comment,” while organizing PDFs is listed for Acrobat Pro and Acrobat Studio. Reader’s Rotate view is the temporary kind.

In paid Acrobat, Adobe’s steps are:

  1. Open the PDF and select All tools > Organize pages.
  2. Choose the pages from the dropdown under Pages selected: a preset such as Even pages, Odd pages, or All pages, or specific page numbers.
  3. Select Rotate page left for 90° counterclockwise or Rotate page right for 90° clockwise.
  4. Close the tools pane and save the PDF.

Adobe also runs a free online rotate tool. Its page says you can rotate up to 1,500 pages with a total file size limit of 100MB, and that “Your file will be securely handled by Adobe servers and deleted unless you sign in to save it.” In other words, the file is uploaded first.

How do I rotate a PDF on a Mac?

Preview, which comes with macOS, rotates the pages themselves. Apple’s steps:

  • One page: open the PDF in Preview and click the Rotate Left button. Keep clicking to keep rotating. To rotate right, hold the Option key while you click.
  • Several pages: choose View > Thumbnails or View > Contact Sheet, select the pages, then click Rotate Left, or hold Option to rotate right.

Apple says “Preview automatically saves changes for you as you work,” so the rotation is kept without a separate step. You can still choose File > Save. If you change your mind later, File > Revert To takes the file back to an earlier version.

How do I rotate a PDF on iPhone?

Apple’s iPhone User Guide for iOS 26 and iOS 27 covers this in the Preview app:

  1. Open the PDF in Preview.
  2. Tap the Show Sidebar button to show the page thumbnails. If the button does not appear, tap the PDF first.
  3. Tap the More button, then tap Rotate Left or Rotate Right.

To undo, tap the More button, then Undo. On an iPhone without Preview, or to turn several pages in one go, open Organize PDF in Safari, tick the pages, rotate, and export.

How do I rotate a PDF in Microsoft Edge or Chrome and save it?

Not in the built-in viewer, for now. Microsoft describes Rotate in Edge’s PDF reader as a reading and navigation feature, and Adobe says a rotation made in Chrome, Edge, or Firefox cannot be saved. Open Organize PDF in a new tab of the same browser instead, add the file, rotate the pages, and export.

Edge may catch up. A Microsoft 365 roadmap entry added on October 20, 2026, and marked “In development,” says Edge users will be able to “select pages to extract, delete, rotate, or reorder, and save the result as a new PDF file,” with files processed on the device. The entry lists January 2027. Until that ships, the rotate button in Edge only turns the view.

How do I rotate a PDF on Android?

Google’s help page for its Files by Google app lists zooming, sharing, finding text, printing, and annotating PDFs, but not rotating pages. Open Organize PDF in Chrome on the phone instead: pick the file, tick the sideways pages, tap Rotate right or Rotate left, and export. Use the Move earlier and Move later arrows on each card if you also need to change the order.

What is the shortcut to rotate a PDF?

In Acrobat and Acrobat Reader on Windows, Adobe lists Shift+Ctrl+Plus to rotate clockwise and Shift+Ctrl+Minus to rotate counterclockwise. Both run Rotate view, the temporary kind, so the page goes back to its old orientation when you reopen the file.

Every control in Organize PDF works from the keyboard. Tab to a page’s checkbox, press Space to tick it, then tab to Rotate right and press Enter.

How do I fix a scanned PDF that is sideways or upside down?

Rotate the affected pages in Organize PDF as above: once for a sideways page, twice for an upside-down one. Then fix it at the source next time. If you scan with RealScaner on your phone, the scanner has a Rotate page button for the page you are editing, so you can turn it before you download the PDF.

Rotation comes in quarter turns. For a page photographed at a slant, mark its four corners in the scanner, which squares it up. How to scan multiple pages into one PDF covers the checks worth doing before you send a scan.

Is it safe to rotate a PDF online?

It depends on the file. Most online rotators upload the PDF first. Adobe’s rotate page says files are handled by Adobe servers and deleted unless you sign in. That is fine for a flyer. For a lease, a bank statement, or an ID card, a tool that never sends the file anywhere is the calmer choice.

Organize PDF works inside the browser tab. It reads and rebuilds the PDF on your device with pdf-lib, an open-source PDF library, and the file is never uploaded. If you accept analytics in the consent banner, the tool records only counts and sizes, such as the number of pages, never the file name or its contents. For more on what stays local, read what stays on your device with browser document tools.

What Organize PDF does

  • It turns pages in exact quarter turns, the way the PDF standard stores rotation, so nothing is redrawn or blurred.
  • It deletes, reorders, and extracts pages on the same screen, and combines several PDFs into one.
  • It works on unlocked PDFs. For a password-protected file, Unlock PDF removes the password once you enter it, and for a file you own that only has editing restrictions, it removes those. A file marked SECURED in Acrobat is usually the restricted kind, as explained in why does my PDF say SECURED.
  • It saves a new file, so a digitally signed original stays valid for anyone who checks it. Adobe’s technical note on PDF signatures says “any attempt to alter the document by modifying the file (such as signing it again) will invalidate the existing digital signature,” so send the signed original where the signature matters, or ask the sender for a corrected copy.
  • When a file has a standard fillable form, it spots the form and offers to flatten the visible filled values first.
  • It leaves your original untouched and downloads a new copy.

Key takeaways

  • A rotation that sticks changes the pages. View > Rotate view in Acrobat or Reader is undone the next time you open the file.
  • Free and without uploading: tick the pages in RealScaner Organize PDF, press Rotate right or Rotate left, then export and download.
  • Mac Preview rotates the pages and saves as you work. Paid Acrobat uses Organize pages. The free desktop Reader cannot save a rotation.
  • Rotate in Microsoft Edge is a reading control today. Microsoft’s roadmap lists an Edge page organizer with rotate and save for January 2027.
  • Rotation comes in quarter turns, and the RealScaner scanner squares a crooked photo by its four corners. A digitally signed PDF loses its valid signature on any rotated copy.

Common questions

How do I rotate a PDF and save it that way?

Rotate the pages, not the view. In RealScaner Organize PDF, tick the sideways pages, press Rotate right or Rotate left, then press Export PDF and download the new file. On a Mac, rotate the pages in Preview, which saves changes as you work. In paid Acrobat, use Organize pages and then save.

Why does my PDF go back to sideways after I rotate it?

You rotated the view, not the pages. Adobe says View > Rotate view is temporary and the original page orientation is restored the next time you open the PDF. Microsoft lists Rotate among the reading and navigation features of the Edge PDF reader. Use a tool that rotates the pages and saves a new file.

Can I rotate a PDF in Adobe Acrobat Reader and save it for free?

Not in the desktop Reader. Adobe lists Acrobat Reader for viewing, printing, sharing, and commenting, and lists organizing PDFs under Acrobat Pro. Reader’s Rotate view is temporary. Adobe’s free online rotate tool can save a rotated copy, but it uploads the file to Adobe’s servers first.

How do I rotate only one page of a PDF?

In Organize PDF, tick only that page, press Rotate right or Rotate left, and export. Every other page keeps its orientation. In Acrobat, enter the page number under Pages selected. In Preview on a Mac, select that page’s thumbnail before you rotate.

What is the keyboard shortcut to rotate a PDF?

In Acrobat and Acrobat Reader on Windows, Adobe lists Shift+Ctrl+Plus to rotate clockwise and Shift+Ctrl+Minus to rotate counterclockwise. These run Rotate view, and Adobe’s help says a view rotation is undone the next time you open the file.

Does rotating a PDF reduce its quality?

Not when the pages are rotated properly. The PDF standard stores rotation as a number on each page, in multiples of 90 degrees, so the page content is not redrawn. RealScaner Organize PDF copies pages without turning them into images, so text stays selectable.
